This study investigates the factors influencing students' choice of culinary arts as a career in Thai culinary schools. Using a mixed-methods approach based on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), the research combines quantitative data from 329 survey participants with qualitative insights from in-depth interviews. The quantitative findings showed that while family support, self-efficacy, and attitudes towards a chef career were not significant predictors, age was noteworthy; younger students (ages 18–20) were more likely to pursue culinary careers than older students (ages 21–25). Qualitative analysis revealed the importance of passion, family support, and cultural identity in shaping career aspirations. Although mass media initially inspired students, its long-term impact was limited. The study highlighted the need to align career expectations with industry realities. Overall, this research enhances our understanding of career decision-making in culinary education. It underscores the importance of realistic career counselling and mentorship in culinary programs while suggesting that future research should explore other factors like peer influence and economic considerations.en_US
