Abstract: Palm oil production is a significant economic driver in Southeast Asia, but it also raises concerns about environmental and social impacts. The RSPO was established to promote sustainable palm oil production, but its adoption among smallholders remains low in Thailand. In light of the context, this research investigates the barriers hindering the adoption of Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) practices among Thai smallholders in the palm oil sector. It aims to identify these challenges and propose viable solutions based on the RSPO criteria, integrated with the triple bottom line framework, to foster sustainable practices among these smallholders. The purpose of this paper is to identify the specific barriers faced by Thai smallholders in adopting RSPO standards and to recommend solutions to increase the adoption rate of RSPO practices in Thailand. This research employs a literature review to examine existing knowledge on the palm oil industry, RSPO, and barriers faced by smallholders. Additionally, case studies and interviews with stakeholders may be conducted to gain deeper insights. The significance of this research is to contribute valuable insights to various stakeholders, including policymakers, industry players, and NGOs, by highlighting the challenges faced by smallholders in adopting sustainable practices and providing recommendations for overcoming these barriers and promoting RSPO adoption. Ultimately, contributing to a more sustainable palm oil industry that aligns with environmental, social, and economic considerations.
