Abstract: | The automotive industry has developed significantly through the growth of electrical vehicles (EVs) and autonomous driving. Mechanical steering systems, such as Power-Assisted Steering (PAS), are being replaced by the by-wire technology, known as steer-by-wire (SbW). This thematic paper explores the current state and future outlook of SbW by exploring safety standards, market projections, key players and their activities, and consumer perceptions. The study reveals the basic safety standards covering the implementation of SbW technology in passenger vehicles. The paper also assesses the future of SbW by analyzing the global demand for steering systems, key market drivers, and steering suppliers and OEM activities. The finding on consumer perception of the SbW highlights that despite numerous benefits including enhanced driving safety, elevated fuel efficiency, and design flexibility, there are various concerns regarding its reliability and safety, particularly in the absence of a mechanical backup. Overall, this research provides recommendations for Vitesco to understand the basic standards to be achieved for their sensors and enhance the collaboration with Tier 1 automotive suppliers by focusing on the highest growth market, Europe and China. |
